In 1948, the British cosmologist Fred Hoyle said that the first images of Earth taken from space would change forever the way you think the planet. Forty years later, on 24 December 1968, the astronauts of Apollo 8 mission took the first pictures of this kind: in one, the Earth appeared as a fragile blue and white sphere suspended above the barren lunar horizon , grayish brown. In the book 100 photographs that changed the world, published by LIFE in 2003, this image was described as the most influential from environmental point of view.
